South Dakota was the 40th state in the USA; it became a state on November 2, 1889. The state is divided by the Missouri River, a major waterway and North America’s longest river. Located near the city of Keystone is the Mount Rushmore National Monument. The carved sculpture covers 1,278.45 acres and is 5,725 feet above sea level.
