West Virginia Day is a holiday that celebrates West Virginia being formally admitted in to the Union. This is the only state in the US that was formed by seceding from a Confederate state. West Virginia was originally part of Virginia. In 1861 Virginia seceded from the Union. The western side of the state did not agree with the politicians and worked to separate themselves from the Confederate state of Virginia. After over two years of trying, West Virginia was admitted in to the Union as a new state on June 20th, 1863.
